{"id":254355,"date":"2026-09-06T20:17:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T20:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.gov.ng\/news\/?p=254355"},"modified":"2026-09-07T07:21:53","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T07:21:53","slug":"nigeria-facilitates-safe-return-of-ex-sierra-leone-president-koroma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foreignaffairs.gov.ng\/news\/nigeria-facilitates-safe-return-of-ex-sierra-leone-president-koroma\/","title":{"rendered":"NIGERIA FACILITATES SAFE RETURN OF EX-SIERRA LEONE PRESIDENT KOROMA."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Obasanjo escort exiled leader to Freetown<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria has facilitated the safe and dignified return of former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma to Freetown, following more than two years of temporary relocation to Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who accompanied Koroma to Sierra Leone on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, described the development as the successful conclusion of a regional diplomatic and confidence-building process.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also joined the minister in escorting Koroma back to Freetown.<\/p>\n<p>She said Koroma\u2019s relocation to Nigeria in January 2024 followed engagements by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) aimed at promoting peace, stability and political understanding in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the process helped foster greater understanding between President Julius Maada Bio and Koroma, creating the conditions for his temporary stay in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis conduct throughout this period reflected restraint, statesmanship, and commitment to a peaceful outcome,\u201d Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.
