Nigeria has urged the African Union (AU) to adopt innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms to strengthen the continent\u2019s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the call in Nigeria\u2019s National Statement at the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Luanda, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.<\/p>\n

She noted that Member States had contributed about $350.2 million to the AU Peace Fund, while its balance had exceeded $405 million, with about $39 million already disbursed for mediation, preventive diplomacy and peace support operations.<\/p>\n

Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged Member States to fulfil their assessed and voluntary contributions and support the progressive capitalisation of the Fund towards its $1 billion target.<\/p>\n

She also proposed innovative revenue-generating initiatives involving African financial institutions and credible private-sector operators, alongside full implementation of the 0.2 per cent Kigali Financing Decision.<\/p>\n

The Minister stressed that stronger African ownership and sustainable domestic financing were essential to achieving lasting peace and security and advancing the objectives of Agenda 2063.<\/p>\n
