NIGERIA SEEKS INNOVATIVE FINANCING FOR AU PEACE FUND.

Nigeria has urged the African Union (AU) to adopt innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms to strengthen the continent’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the call in Nigeria’s National Statement at the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Luanda, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

She noted that Member States had contributed about $350.2 million to the AU Peace Fund, while its balance had exceeded $405 million, with about $39 million already disbursed for mediation, preventive diplomacy and peace support operations.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged Member States to fulfil their assessed and voluntary contributions and support the progressive capitalisation of the Fund towards its $1 billion target.

She also proposed innovative revenue-generating initiatives involving African financial institutions and credible private-sector operators, alongside full implementation of the 0.2 per cent Kigali Financing Decision.

The Minister stressed that stronger African ownership and sustainable domestic financing were essential to achieving lasting peace and security and advancing the objectives of Agenda 2063.
