The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received in audience Ambassador Uzo Nwobu, former Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025. The retired career diplomat was accompanied by Barrister Chuma Mbonu, to formally convey the profound gratitude of the family of the late Air Vice Marshal Osy Obierika. The visit was undertaken in recognition of the Minister’s timely and compassionate intervention following the tragic passing of AVM Obierika aboard a British Airways flight in October 2025, which was diverted to Spain.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Barrister Mbonu expressed deep appreciation for the Honourable Minister’s decisive role in ensuring that Mrs. Uchenna Obierika, who was initially denied entry into Spain, was granted the necessary visa and provided full consular assistance upon arrival. At a moment of immense shock and grief—when the remains of her late husband had been removed from the aircraft—this intervention spared her additional distress and provided essential support as she confronted a painful and devastating loss.
Barrister Mbonu noted that the Minister’s actions went far beyond routine official responsibility. His humane and compassionate response brought great comfort to Mrs. Obierika at a time of profound sorrow and, importantly, reflected the enduring spirit of unity and mutual care that binds Nigerians together both at home and abroad.
In his remarks, the Honourable Minister thanked Barrister Mbonu for the family’s warm words and emphasized that assisting a Nigerian facing such a tragic situation was, for him, more than a professional obligation—it was a moral duty.
The family remains sincerely grateful for the Honourable Minister’s swift, empathetic, and impactful intervention, which not only eased the burden on Mrs. Obierika but also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians wherever they may be.
