NIGERIA ASSUMES CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE AFRICAN GROUP AT THE UNITED NATIONS
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that Nigeria on Tuesday, 5 March, 2019 assumed the Chairmanship of the African Group at the United Nations for the month of March 2019, succeeding the Republic of Benin.
- The Nigerian Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Tijjani Bande, took over from his counterpart Jean-Claude do Rego, from the Republic of Benin, at a ceremony at the African Union Observer Mission in New York.
- In his acceptance remarks, Ambassador Bande pledged Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the position of the African continent in the United Nations. He also opined that his focus as Chairman of the African Group will foster the work of consolidating Africa’s position on a number of important issues from the point of view of the continent. Some of the issues are: Security Council Reforms, Peace and Security around the globe, and the Status of Women.
