Relations between Nigeria and Italy have remained warm. The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Italy in January, 2012. His predecessor had visited in May 2011. The Special Envoy of the Italian Foreign Minister on Humanitarian Crises, Margherita Boniver visited Nigeria in July 2012.
In November 2011 and May 2012, two trade Missions from Italy visited Nigeria. In December 2011, Nigeria, through its Mission in Italy actively participated in the 69th Session of the General Assembly of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), which was jointly hosted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ad the International Maritime Organisation, in Rome.
As part of efforts to attract Foreign Direct Investment to Nigeria, the Ministry participated in the “Fiera de Levante” and “Macfrut” trade fairs in Bari and Cesena respectively. The fairs offered the needed platform to garner investor for the Nigerian market. Similarly, in December 2011 and May 2012, an Italian Consortium, Cooperfield led two trade missions to Nigeria.
