OFFICE OF THE HOUNOURABLE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND ITS RESPONSIBILITIES

The Office of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is the highest office in the Ministry. The Minister is appointed by the President. He or she is supported by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs who is also appointed by the President. The other Officers who help the Office of the Minister to execute its responsibilities include Directors, and Foreign Service Officers who are career diplomats, etc

The responsibilities of the Office of the Mnister include:

  • maintaining relations with other states and international organizations;
  • representing and protecting the interests of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , Nigerian citizens and legal entities abroad;
  • organizing and supervising the activities of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions and consulates;
  • implementing policies and supervising their implementation through the relevant agencies;
  • directing the government administration branches of foreign relations;
  • maintaining the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s relations with other states and international organizations;
  • coordinating the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

OFFICE OF THE HOUNOURABLE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND ITS RESPONSIBILITIES.

The Office of the Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is the second ranking office in Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister of State is appointed by the President and assisted by Directors and other Foreign Service Officers. The Office assists the Minister of Foreign Affairs in carring out its mandate.

In addition, the Minister of State supervises agncies under the Ministry. These include the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Directorate of Technical Aid Corps and Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa.

OFFICE OF THE PERMANENT SECRETARY

The office of the Permanent Secretary is saddled with the responsibilities administering, coordinating and supervising the execution of ministerial policies. The Permanent Secretary supports the Minister by ensuring the execution of projects and policy formulation.The Permanent Secretary is regarded as the Chief Accounting Officer of the Ministry.

The Permanent Secretary performs its function in conjunction with Directorates, Departments, Divisions and Sections/Units. He is assited by Under Secretaries and Directors of varies Heads of Departments. The following units are directly under the office of the Permanent Secretary:Coordination and Liaison Office,Office of the Legal Adviser,Audit Division and Crisis Monitoring and Public Communication Division.

The Permanent Secretary determines Divisional roles and organisational structure in consultation with Directors.
